7 Bollywood Stars Speak Up About Casting Couch
Here are 7 celebrities who were bold enough to speak up about the infamous casting couch.
Ranveer Singh
Bollywood’s Bajirao has been one of the bold actors to speak up about the dark side of the industry. In an interview the actor had conceded that, "Casting couch is a very real thing. I have experienced it first-hand," "When I said 'no' (to his demands), he cried like a jilted lover. Later, I got to know that he does it to everyone."
Yikes! That sounds like one hell of an experience!
Ayushmann Khurana
Recently, even Ayushmann Khurana opened up about his casting couch experience and boy, were we shocked! Here’s what the actor had to say.
“I have been through that (casting couch) initially when I was part of the industry. I was a TV anchor, so a casting director directly told me that I would have to do it. So, I told him that if I was not straight, I might have given it a thought, but I can't do it. So yeah, the casting couch exists, but eventually, it's your talent or potential as an actor or performer which would last. You don't need to give in to such stuff.”
Well said, Ayushmann!
Madhur Bhandarkar
Madhur Bhandarkar’s infamous case with Preeti Jain had made headlines. Starlet Preeti Jain had accused the director of raping her in exchange of a film role. After years of hearings, the case was declared in favour of Madhur. Madhur gave his opinion about the casting couch and made a point.
“It’s embedded in every field, not just the film industry. Our industry is talked about because it’s in the limelight. Also, who are we kidding? Everybody is an adult here. Nothing happens without consent.”
Sad but very, very true.
Kangana Ranaut
The actress who is known to be very bold and open with her words also had a few thoughts on the casting couch.
“Fortunately, I never had to go through the casting couch. Honestly, I feel somebody has to be really dumb to think that they’d get a role for sleeping around. And I have never been so dumb — not even at the age of 17 when I started my career. People should use their common sense. It’s stupid if you actually believe someone who tells you that he or she is giving you a role only if you please him or her.”
“If the casting couch route was so easy, then all the women from the red light area would have been superstars today.”
Well, she’s got a point, you know.
Ram Gopal Varma
The director we all love to hate, RGV who has been linked with many of his actresses too has shared his thoughts.
“Casting exists, so does the couch!”
As much as we hate to admit it, it’s true.
Tisca Chopra
Popular actress Tisca Chopra who has worked in many Bollywood movies and has also been on the jury of MAMI film festival shared her opinion on the casting couch.
“It’s a question of supply and demand. The supply of actors is far greater than their demand and so the directors and producers demand something extra for giving chances to aspirants, I have never heard of anybody raping anyone.”
In fact, she herself has been a victim but she “devised a cunning plan and managed to escape from the situation. ”You call their bluff and say I am better than this, ‘I can do this on my own merit’,” she says.
We have to say, that’s quite an interesting way of putting it.
Kalki Koechlin
Kalki Koechlin too has experienced the casting couch but she managed to slip through it. Here’s what she had to say in an interview.
“I must say, of course, it exists! It did try and entangle me in its grip but I am slippery, I always managed to get out of it. The minute I felt uncomfortable, I walked away!
The crux of the matter is that a bad actor, however much she works her way through the casting couch, will never sustain. She still remains a bad actor! The casting couch is not the answer to any aspiring actor’s route to success.”
Well there’s a reason why she’s called beauty with brains!
