Baaghi: 3rd highest opener of 2016

By collecting Rs. 11.87 crores on the first day of release, Baaghi has become the 3rd highest opener of 2016, leaving behind Kapoor and Sons and Ki and Ka. Incidentally, the latter two movies picked up in the ensuing weeks. Will Baaghi continue to do well at the box-office or will the frenzy around the film go down? Let’s find out.

Baaghi (meaning Rebel) is a romantic action film directed by Sabbir Khan (director of Kambhaqt Ishq and Heropanti) and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala under his banner Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment.

Despite the legal challenges and controversies surrounding the alleged inspiration of the plot from the Indonesian film- The Raid Redemption, the movie's plot does seem to be similar to the Indonesian film and that of the 2004 Telugu movie Varsham.

Scared that his son Ronney (Tiger Shroff) will turn rebellious, Colonel Samarjit Singh sends him off to his friend's gurukul, in Kerala, to transform him.  En route, Ronney meets Siya (Shraddha Kapoor) in the train. They fall in love instantly.  However, fate separates them until she gets into big trouble. She is shooting for a film directed by her Daddy PP Khurana (Sunil Grover), when Raghav Shetty (the goon from Bangkok) abducts her. Martial arts expert Ronnie Singh is her only hope to see freedom.

Tiger Shroff has a plastic body (that’s what he’s known for) which he uses competently, displaying his well gained martial arts skills superbly. This is probably the first Bollywood film which shows the martial art form Kalaripayattu with such elan. Also a first is the use of combat alone to perform amazing stunts. Rohit Shetty, will we see more in your films soon?

Tiger Shroff also dances effortlessly in the film. However, when it comes to acting, he has a long way to go. In his first film Heropanti, his arrogance (overacting) was the need of the role. However, there are parts in the film when he is not fighting or dancing where he simply overdoes.

Shraddha Kapoor is effortless in the dancing and action sequences.  The song sung by her ‘Sab tera’ is melodious and is already a chartbuster.  Together, Tiger and Shradha make a great pair and have good chemistry.

Everybody knows what a great actor Sunil Grover is. As Khurana, the opportunistic father of Sia, he does a good job. Sudheer Babu as the bad guy Raghav is equally flexible as Tiger makes a mark as a Bollywood villain.

Julius Packiam's background score is good for an action packed film like this. The music of the film is composed by Meet Bros, Amaal Mallik, Ankit Tiwari & Manj Musik and is decent. The lyrics do not go well with the script.  The cinematography by Binod Pradhan captures great angles and locales of Kerala and Bangkok, which makes the film visually appealing.

What the film badly needed was a good narrative.  The story written by Sanjeev Dutta lacks novelty and wow factors. There are a few comic moments but the script is superficial. While the first half is good, the climax is stretched and non-appealing.

All in all, Baaghi is all action and no substance. For this reason, it may be difficult for the film to continue doing well at the box office.
