Nil Battey Sannata is a light-hearted film with a message

***

Fom the time the first poster of 'Nil Battey Sannata' was unveiled; the quirky and unusual title of this film piqued everyone's curiosity. Director Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari in one of her interviews clarified that the title is slang in Uttar Pradesh, which means being an absolute zero or incompetent (Nil-zero, Battey-divide, Sannata-zero).

The film is a family entertainer with Swara Bhaskar in the lead along with Ratna Pathak, Pankaj Tripathi and Ria Shukla. The film is produced by Anand L. Rai (director of Tanu Weds Manu series) and Ajay Rai - Alan McAlex under Colour Yellow (Producers of Tanu weds Manu series) and JAR Pictures  . The Hindi film releases with its Tamil remake Amma Kanakku which is produced by Anand L. Rai and Dhanush.

The story revolves around Matric- fail’, single mother Chanda Sahay (Swara Bhaskar) who lives in Agra. Daughter Apeksha  aka Apu (Riya Shukla) is a laggard and back bencher in school. She is very adamant and fails to have any affinity to studies specially Maths.  Chanda does multiple menial jobs to educate Apu.  She is dreaming of the stars for her daughter whereas her daughter is ungrateful and defensive.  One of Chanda’s employers is a doctor who, with the help of the principal of Apu’s school (Pankaj Tripathi) creates a learning atmosphere for the mother-daughter duo in school and at home. A boy from Apu’s class who enjoys Maths helps the duo to overcome their fear of Maths.

Performance wise, Swara has worked really hard to overcome her sophistication to get into the skin of Chanda. Her efforts to portray mixed feelings of a mother of an adolescent girl deserve appreciation.

Riya Shukla is young and very talented and her sweet-bitter performance will connect with the youth of today.  She’s given a few dialogues which she just delivers without feeling. The rest of her dialogues are well connected to her performance.  After Kapoor and Sons, Ratna Pathak Shah shines in this film again. The star performer of the film, however, is Pankaj Tripathi whose Maths lectures will make you laugh.  Through the mother- daughter’s struggles, Ashwiny has tried to touch the cords of millions of parents and children.

The songs of this film are good. Maths mein dabba gull is a peppy number with funny poetical lyrics. Nitesh Tiwari has intellectually woven the lyrics of this song around Maths and the lives of Chanda and Apu. Mohan Kanan and Hariharan’s Maa is soul touching.

At one hour forty minutes, Nil Battey Sannata' is a simple, heart touching film with a message- irrespective of one's past; everyone has the right to change their present. Surprisingly, the message delivery is not preachy. Instead it is through light hearted humor, soulful songs and effortless performances.

It is easy for me to recommend this film to people, especially those who like meaningful cinema and performances. But I know this film is not widespread yet and is running very few shows currently. Watch it wherever you can. Who knows, with the good response of cinema goers, the movie may see the light of single screens and other multiplexes soon!
