Review: Rocky Handsome is a silent action thriller
Rating: - **
Rocky Handsome is an action thriller film directed by Nishikant Kamat. It is a loose adaptation of the 2010 Korean film ‘The Man from Nowhere’. John has co-produced this film under his home banner John Abraham Entertainment with Sunir Khetrapal’s Azure Entertainment.
The film’s story revolves around a man who sets out to take revenge against drug mafia after they take away an eight-year-old girl, with whom he shares a special bond.
The film begins with an awfully silent Rocky (John Abraham) buying fishes and flowers. The film then takes us into Rocky’s flashback showing his happy times with his wife Rukshida Kabir Ahlawat (Shruti Hasan). In the present, Rocky’s neighbor is a duo of mother Anna (Nathalia Kaur) and daughter Nayomi (Diya Chalwad). Nayomi is a frequent visitor to Rocky's pawn shop. On one such visit, she confesses to Rocky that others think of him as a criminal but she doesn’t believe them. She also tells him about the hard life she faces due to her mother’s drug addiction. One day, Nayomi is kidnapped. All of this leads to a deal that Rocky strikes with Nayomi's kidnappers Kevin (Nishikanth Kamath) and his psycho brother Luke Ferreira (Teddy Maurya). What follows, is brutal murders. Amidst all this, the police discovers Rocky's shocking past. What is his past, the reasons and will he succeed in tracing Nayomi and her mother? This forms the rest of the film.

Performance wise, John is best at doing what he is supposed to-look handsome! Apart from that, he is an introvert and for most part of the film, he is silent. Nonetheless, some of the action scenes he performs are extraordinary. Shruti Hasan has a meagre role which does not use her potential. Nathalia Kaur looks sultry and acts well.
The film's director Nishikant Kamat has made filmst like DRISHYAM, FORCE and MUMBAI MERI JAAN in the past. Just like his recent film Drishyam which was short and crisp, Rocky Handsome too runs for a short time. One more similarity between the two films is Goa, where both films are shot. The music of the film by T-series is average, but the background score is gripping. The flip side is that the story has nothing new to offer and the screenplay looks disjointed at a lot of places. Except for the jaw dropping action scenes, Shanker Raman’s cinematography and John’s style, one cannot look forward to anything in this film.

Overall, Rocky Handsome is a silent action thriller which can be watched for John’s style and action sequences. Given that this long weekend has a plethora of Bollywood and Hollywood releases to offer, it may be a good idea to choose the film which appeals to you more.
