Double Dhamaal: Iconic double roles in Bollywood movies
Don’t we all just love when we get two things at the price of one? Well, why then would the audience not love when they get to see twice of their favourite actor in a movie? Yes, we are talking about Bollywood’s most favoured formula – "ek ke saath ke free"- double roles. ( Don't Miss: Bollywood Actors who dared to be different )
Let's have a dekho at the iconic double roles played by our lovely bollywood stars:
Prem Ratan Dhan PaayoAlmost 16 years after their last collaboration ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’, Salman Khan and Sooraj R. Barjatya are back together. And in 'PRDP', Salman Khan has a double role, one as Prem and other as Vijay. Did you know that this is the 15th movie in which Salman Khan will be playing a character called Prem? And, it was actually Barjatya who gave Salman his most popular on-screen name Prem in ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’. ( Read Also : Bollywood actress who appeared in double roles for their movies )
Seeta Aur Geeta:
This Ramesh Sippy film is not only remembered for its high-on-drama content, but for its comedy quotient as well. Dream Girl Hema Malini plays the role of Seeta and Geeta, twin sisters who are separated at birth. While the one raised in a poor neighbourhood turns into a feisty street performer, the other is raised in a rich home by her cruel aunt who treats her like a servant. This movie saw Hema Malini being paired opposite Sanjeev Kumar and Dharmendra. The pairing, reportedly, led to an love triangle that caused sparks off-screen than on it!
Judwaa:
'PRDP' is not Salman’s first brush with double roles. He essayed the role of twin brothers (yes, once again, separated at birth!) in ‘Judwaa’. The movie was a hit at the box office, and it featured Karisma Kapoor and Rambha opposite Salman Khan(s). Apart from Salman’s brush with comedy, the movie is also remembered for its songs, “Oonchi Hai Building” and “Tan Tana Tan Tan Tan Tara”.
Dushman:
This 1998 Bollywood thriller saw Kajol in a double role. It was the story of a sister who goes on a hunt to find the man who rapes and murders her twin sister. The movie won Kajol many awards, including a Filmfare Best Actress nomination. ( You may also like: Best psychological movies of all time )
Chaalbaaz:
Inspired by 'Seeta Aur Geeta', 'ChaalBaaz' saw Sridevi playing the role of twin sisters - Anju and Manju. But this film carved its own niche thanks to Sridevi’s brilliant comic timing and the super hit track- “Naa jaane kahan se aayi hai”.
Ram aur Shyam
Talk about the iconic double roles in Bollywood movies, and this Dilip Kumar-starrer will definitely be the first on any list. ‘Ram Aur Shyam’ adopted one of the frequently used formulas of Bollywood - twins who are separated at birth, grow up to be characteristically opposite, and end up, unknowingly, swapping their places. Yes, this is the film that inspired almost half of the movies on the list like 'Seeta Aur Geeta', 'ChaalBaaz' and 'Kishen Kanhaiya'.
Bade Miyan Chote Miyan:
The second highest grosser of 1998 was this Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda starrer, where both the actors played double roles. ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miya’ was the first major box office success in Amitabh Bachchan’s second innings in Bollywood.
Kaminey
‘Kaminey’ saw Shahid in a double role as Charlie and Guddu. While one brother had a lisp, the other one stuttered. This movie was a showcase for Shahid Kapoor’s acting skills. It not only won him critical acclaim but many award nominations as well.
Rowdy Rathore
Akshay Kumar and Prabhu Deva’s first collaboration left many a critics scratching their heads and producers minting money. 'Rowdy Rathore' saw Akshay Kumar in a double role, one as a small-time thief and other as an ACP. The movie also starred Sonakshi Sinha.

Shah Rukh Khan in a double role, now isn’t that irresistible? This is what SRK fans must have thought before watching the travesty of a movie! Directed by Mahesh Bhatt and produced by Yash Johar, the film was a snooze-fest, though it did get SRK a Filmfare Award nomination in the Best Villain category in 1999. Did you know that a year before 'Duplicate', Akshay Kumar too starred in a movie with similar plot - ‘Aflatoon’?
DON:
Who can forget the classic dialogue - “Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahi, na mumkin hai”? 'Don' had Amitabh Bachchan in a double role. The film is not only remembered for its dialogues, but also super-hit songs like "Yeh Mera Dil", "Khaike Pan Banaraswala”, “Jiska Mujhe Tha Intezar” and “Main Hoon Don”. ‘Don’ was remade in 2006, with Shah Rukh Khan essaying the role played by Amitabh
Tanu Weds Manu Returns
The sequel to the 2011 super hit film 'Tanu Weds Manu' saw Kangana Ranaut in a double role. When much-married Tanu (Kangana) and Manu (R. Madhavan) are no longer able to keep their marriage (and sanity) intact, they return back to their hometowns (Kanpur and Delhi, respectively). And, Manu runs into Tanu’s doppelganger, Kusum (yes, literally runs into!). Just like its prequel, Tanu Weds Manu Returns was received well by both critics and the audience.
